Industry · Compressed biogas

Land for compressed biogas plants in Gujarat.

A Napier-grass CBG project needs two kinds of land at once: a compact industrial plant site and a large, irrigated feedstock catchment around it. We assemble both — and sequence the approvals so the plant and the fields close together.

Compressed biogas is a feedstock business wearing an industrial plant's clothes. The digester, upgrading and compression skid sit on a few acres; the Napier grass that feeds them needs hundreds of acres of irrigated farmland within a short haul. Most stalled CBG projects in India did not fail at the plant — they failed at the catchment. So we start with water, haul distance and landowner depth, then fix the plant site inside that radius, then line up the offtake route to a gas network, fuel retail or an industrial buyer.

Where to set up

Cluster choices for compressed biogas.

Morbi

The ceramic cluster is one of Gujarat's heaviest industrial gas users, which opens a direct industrial-offtake route for CBG alongside the SATAT channel. Plant sites sit on the periphery with farm catchments further out.

See cluster page

Hansalpur–Becharaji (Mehsana)

North Gujarat's dairy belt — useful where the process design co-digests cattle dung with Napier grass. Private 63AA parcels for the plant, with canal and borewell farmland in the surrounding talukas.

See cluster page

Halol (Central Gujarat)

An established industrial corridor with irrigated, fertile farm belts across Panchmahal and the Kheda–Anand side — a practical balance of feedstock catchment and plant-site access.

See cluster page

Sanand (Ahmedabad district)

Close to Ahmedabad's city-gas demand and the wider Sanand–Viramgam farm belt. Suits developers who value proximity to the gas grid and to a large CNG retail market.

See cluster page

Dahej (Bharuch)

Pipeline-grade gas infrastructure and a dense base of industrial gas consumers, with farmland along the Narmada side of Bharuch district for the feedstock catchment.

What actually decides

Five considerations the experienced buyer weighs.

Feedstock catchment first

Napier grass is bulky and wet, so haulage cost rises quickly with distance. We map irrigated, contiguous farmland within a short radius of the proposed plant before shortlisting any plant site. The acreage follows plant capacity and the co-digestion recipe — a 5 TPD plant typically needs a few hundred acres under grass.

Water, not soil, decides yield

Field yields can vary sharply with irrigation discipline and water quality. We verify the water source — canal command, borewell depth and salinity — parcel by parcel, because a catchment on paper is not a catchment in the field.

Plant site and approvals

The plant itself is an industrial use: a Section 63AA purchase or NA conversion, GPCB consents, and PESO licensing for compressed-gas storage and cascades. We sequence these so the plant site is clean before feedstock contracts are signed.

Structuring the farmland

Feedstock land is rarely bought. It is usually taken on long-term lease or tied up through contract farming with local owners. Leasing agricultural land to a non-agriculturist in Gujarat needs Collector permission under Section 63, so the structure is chosen early — it shapes timelines, bankability and landowner comfort.

Offtake route shapes the map

Selling under SATAT to oil marketing companies, injecting into a city-gas network, or supplying an industrial user each favours different locations. Distance to the grid, to CNG retail, or to a large gas-consuming cluster is weighed alongside the feedstock catchment.

Frequently asked

Frequently asked questions.

How much land does a Napier grass CBG plant need in Gujarat?

Two parts: a plant site of roughly 5–10 acres, and a much larger irrigated catchment for growing Napier grass — typically a few hundred acres for a 5 TPD plant and proportionally more for larger capacities. The exact figure depends on water, yield and whether other feedstock such as cattle dung is co-digested.

Can you provide both the plant site and the feedstock land?

Yes. We shortlist the plant site inside a verified feedstock radius and assemble the surrounding farmland through long-term leases or contract-farming tie-ups with local landowners, with title and water checks on each parcel.

Which approvals does a CBG plant site need?

Typically a Section 63AA purchase or NA conversion for the plant land, GPCB consent to establish and operate, and PESO licensing for compressed-gas storage. Leases of agricultural land for feedstock need Collector permission under Section 63 when the lessee is a non-agriculturist.

Which parts of Gujarat suit a Napier grass CBG project?

Regions with assured irrigation and depth of willing landowners — parts of Central Gujarat, the North Gujarat dairy belt and irrigated pockets of Saurashtra and Bharuch — weighed against the offtake route, such as proximity to a city-gas network or to industrial gas users like the Morbi ceramic cluster.

Do you work with landowners who want to give land for CBG projects?

Yes. Landowners with irrigated, contiguous farmland near active CBG proposals can share parcel details with us; where the land fits a developer's catchment, we take it into the shortlist.
